Update: Town Hall / Market Square Rose Garden Care
The closing of the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center (FAMCC) has many repercussions for the city. One is the Town Hall / Market Square Rose Garden outside the museum’s Old Town Hall entrance, at the William Street walkway to historic Market Square.
We noticed in July that the roses weren’t being tended, and we asked the Department of Economic Development and Tourism about it. “Parks, Recreation & Public Facilities will be taking over the care of the roses,” said Amy Bettis Peregoy, economic development specialist with the department.
But as of Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, the garden is neglected. The roses are overgrown, some bushes are dead, there are weeds, and the planter next to the bench is filled with cigarette butts and trash. We’ve contacted the city and the FAMCC for an update, and we’ll keep you posted. Visitors were walking through the ugliness to peer into the door of the closed museum.
Susan Glasser, president and CEO of the FAMCC announced in a letter April 8, 2015, that the institution was suspending operations while “restructuring to ensure its long-term financial viability.” The museum’s summer concert series in Market Square is continuing through the summer.
