Tourism Related Revenue, Jobs Continue to Grow in Region

Tourism dollars in the region showed yearly growth from 2011 to 2015, according to economic impact of travel studies from the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

The Travel Economic Impacts (TEIM) studies provided estimates of domestic traveler expenditures in Virginia and its 133 counties and independent cities, as well as the employment, payroll income, and state and local tax revenue directly generated by these expenditures. The study focused on comparisons between 2014 and 2015.

Local Tax Receipts (represents the estimates of direct travel-related local taxes generated within the locality)
Fredericksburg: Increased 7.5 percent, from $6,291,055 in 2014 to $ 6,761,724 in 2015.
Spotsylvania: Increased 6.3 percent, from $4,883,714 in 2014 to $5,192,637 in 2015
Stafford: Increased 6.3 percent, from $3,584,804 in 2014 to $3,810,000 in 2015.

Expenditures (including direct spending on food, accommodations, transportation and incidental purchases)
Fredericksburg: Increased 4.1 percent, from $164,715,920 in 2014 to $171,396,180 in 2015.
Spotsylvania: Increased 2.9 percent, from $258,134,546 in 2014 to $265,714,665 in 2015.
Stafford: Increased 2.9 percent, from $123,734,139 in 2014 to $127,315,342 in 2015.

Employment (represents the estimates of direct travel-related employment in the locality)
Fredericksburg: Increased 4.5 percent, from 1,540 workers in 2014 to 1,609 workers in 2015.
Spotsylvania: Increased 3.4 percent, from 2,914 workers in 2014 to 3,012 workers in 2015.
Stafford: Increased 3.3 percent, from 1,317 workers in 2014 to 1,360 workers in 2015.

In 2015, the Virginia Tourism Industry
• Generated $22.9 billion in domestic visitor spending
• Supported 223,100 jobs
• Provided $1.6 billion in state and local taxes for Virginia’s coffers

The travel industry is the fifth largest private employer in Virginia, and the state ranks ninth in domestic traveler spending among 50 states and Washington D.C.

Arlington County led all of Virginia in 2015, receiving close to $3.1 billion in domestic travel expenditures. Fairfax County followed Arlington County closely, ranking second with $2.9 billion. Loudoun County ranked third with $1.6 billion.

The Travel Economic Impacts (TEIM) studies were conducted by the Research Department of the U.S. Travel Association (formerly known as TIA).
