UMW Biology Professor Awarded Fulbright Grant

Dianne Baker, associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Mary Washington, has been selected to receive a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant. Baker will conduct research at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Oslo, Norway, beginning in January 2015.

Fredericksburg Meets Autism Head On

Hats, Heels and Ties charity event to benefit autism research and advocacy is scheduled 12 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, at the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center, 2371 Carl D Silver Pkwy, Fredericksburg.
An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Sales Tax Holiday for Back-to-School

Parents can save money August 1 – 3 during Virginia’s 2014 back-to-school sales tax holiday.
During this three-day period (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation.  Online purchases are included.

University of Mary Washington (UMW) President Richard V. Hurley and Germanna Community College President David A. Sam signed three transfer and co-enrollment agreements for nursing education at a Monday morning ceremony on UMW’s Stafford campus.
The agreements provide three different pathways for a person in the community to become a nurse who is baccalaureate prepared.
