The week’s top stories
-Oscar Ruiz Mejia Jr., 19, of Fredericksburg, was shot and killed in the 200 block of Ivanhoe Court in the city last week. Fredericksburg police say their initial investigation indicated an argument between Mejia and someone else before the shooting, and they have arrested a person of interest in the incident.
-Local radiology group Virginia Medical Imaging has filed a lawsuit against Mary Washington Healthcare, its partner in the company Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg, alleging that the healthcare system engaged in “self-dealing and harmful conduct” against MIF. Adele Uphaus has the story.
-The Virginia Marine Resources Commission last week approved Caroline County’s request to construct a water intake facility on the south bank of the Rappahannock River, determining the work would not harm the waterway. The idea of taking water in this way has been controversial, but county officials say it’s necessary to serve residents and businesses in Caroline. Taft Coghill Jr. has all the details.
-The Stafford Board of Supervisors last week discussed implementing a business, professional and occupational license tax in the county. The locality instead charges a merchants’ capital tax, which is levied on a business’ inventory. That generates about a million dollars a year for Stafford, but the so-called BPOL tax could bring in even more money.
-Historic St. George’s Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg is undergoing a $3 million restoration project, but the work is more than just cosmetic, Lindley Estes writes.
